Abstract
During the period of December 1957 through July 1970, we experienced total 44 cases of surgically
treated tetralogy of Fallot in Severance Hospital, Yonsei University.
1. Among those 44 cases, 21 cases underwent total correction including outflow patch graft in
2 cases and remaining 23 cases submitted to palliative shunt procedures, 4 cases of Blalock-Taussig
shunt, 3 cases of Glenn anastomosis, 4 cases of Potts-Smith procedure and 12 cases of Waterston
Gooley operation.
2. The age of all patients ranged from 1 to 29 and the patients whp received palliative shunt
procedure were smaller than that of total correction, especially the Waterston-Gooley group was
more serious ill with low arterial blood oxygen saturation, severe cyanosis, polycythemia.
3. The operatine mortality in total correction was 33.3% and in palliative shunt procedures
13.1%, but there was no mortality in 12 cases of Waterston-Gooley shunt procedure.
4. While the total correction is the choic of treatment for tetralogy of Fallot, in our institution,
seriously ill small children has led to a policy of primary palliation, followed by total correction as
a secondary procedure after age of 5 years.
